The Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research is responsible for developing a national innovation system that drives knowledge creation, cutting-edge science and research, international competitiveness and greater productivity.

DIISR works with Australian industries to improve their efficiency and competitiveness, it advises the Government on policy and implements programs relating to higher education research, manages national funding of major research infrastructure and facilitates the development of small businesses.
