AIC helps launch Queensland’s Science and Technology Portal at Brisbane Writers Festival

AIC helps launch Queensland’s Science and Technology Portal at Brisbane Writers Festival

AIC’s CEO Dr. Rowan Gilmore was one of three panellists sharing their views on creativity and science in front of a packed audience at the Brisbane Writers Festival.

The panel session was organised as part of the Writers Festival to promote the launch of the Queensland Government’s new website featuring “all things science and technology” in Queensland , www.science.qld.gov.au. Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Carolyn Male launched the site, which highlights some of the best science in  Queensland and discusses its importance to the economy and the environment.  The site features links to some of the AIC’s own portals, such as its website www.ausicom.com, Ideas2Market site and recently launched QWIN Innovation Toolbox www.innovationtoolbox.com.au

The panel was chaired by radio astronomer Fred Watson and in addition to Dr. Gilmore included the author John Birmingham and neuroscientist Mandyam Srinivasan from the Queensland Brain Institute. Each panellist shared their views on the creative passion shared by authors and scientists. Dr. Gilmore was able to share some AIC anecdotes about the difference between creativity and innovation and how creativity could lead passionate inventors astray. He also shared examples where creativity had resulted in successful business outcomes, for instance with the new Joinlox product from Biolytix, or the No 1. Aussie Hangout from the company of the same name, both AIC clients.

The eclectic mix of panellists delighted the audience of several hundred, who asked numerous questions that ranged from the differences between the male and female brain (left unanswered) to the teaching of creativity in schools. The session was a great example where the scientific and commercialisation achievements of the state reached an audience more accustomed to other pursuits!
