Another disappointing finish for Australia
When the respected Conference Board of Canada rates
Canada
a “D” for innovation and gives the country a rank of 14th out of 17 countries, many of us may not be all that concerned…
… except that the same publication ranks
Australia
even lower at 15th.
Australia
is ranked a “D” performer on all 12 indicators that make up the innovation index, except for its proportion of scientific articles (a “B”, still falling behind
Canada
) and knowledge intensive services (an “A”, in fourth place). The ranking of an A for such services is somewhat surprising, but is achieved because a relatively high percentage, 23.6%, of our GDP is derived from services like post and telecommunications, finance and administration, and business services. The cynics among us would argue that it is the very predominance of these in the Australian economy that explain why we do so poorly in many of the other indicators!
