Entrepreneurs seek the tools to take their next steps in business through Ideas2Market

Entrepreneurs seek the tools to take their next steps in business through Ideas2Market

Ideas2Market, the Queensland Government’s Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation and the Australian Institute for Commercialisation’s long running small business program, was recently attended by a keen group of ambitious entrepreneurs.

Around 20 participants attended the full day workshop at Brisbane Technology Park which covered a range of subjects including business planning, marketing, protecting your ideas and financing.

An initiative of the Queensland Government’s Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation , the Ideas2Market small business program is delivered by the Australian Institute for Commercialisation to provide innovators and small-to-medium-enterprises (SMEs) with information and skills to improve their competitive advantage.

In addition to the standard workshop content, the workshop also included presentations from three guest speakers, all of whom provided great insights in to what is required to take business ideas to market.

Ian Dover of Simpler Business explained the benefits of streamlining business processes and procedures to avoid unnecessary complexity, and shared his top tips for simpler business practices which included being focused on “the things we do that make our customers more successful”  and ensuring “solutions rather than problems” are brought to the table.

Paul Harrison of Shelston IP Patent Attorneys outlined the processes required to ensure an idea and intellectual property are protected, and also answered a range of questions from attendees on this key part of commercialising an idea.

Another highlight was the case study, presented by guest speaker Matthew Ellis from Metal Components Pty Ltd . Matthew shared his story from the early days of launching his small business to the current success he now enjoys. Refreshingly honest and full of common sense advice, Matthew’s presentation was motivating and inspiring for everyone.

Workshop attendee Rebecca Barnett said she enjoyed the workshop, particularly the Strategic Planning and Business Finance modules. At the end of the day, Rebecca said “This workshop has been very educational and has given me the boost I need to create my business”.

Business partners Mickael Blanc and Rodney Cusack, the entrepreneurs behind the waterproof asthma inhaler LifeHaler, thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and commented that “the speakers took the workshop to the next level”.
