General Electric’s “Ecomagination Challenge: Powering the Grid” through innovation

General Electric’s “Ecomagination Challenge: Powering the Grid” through innovation

General Electric, in its quest to build the next-generation power grid to meet the needs of the 21st century, is encouraging innovators, entrepreneurs and businesses to share their best ideas.

The $200 million open innovation challenge is seeking breakthrough ideas to create a cleaner and more efficient electric grid and to accelerate the adoption of smart grid technologies.

The world-wide challenge to find the best ideas to solve one of the world’s most critical problems is open for applications at www.ecomagination.com/challenge and proposals are sought across three main categories; renewable, grid, and eco homes/buildings.

Updating the world's aging electrical infrastructure is critical to meeting the ever-increasing demands on the power grid, as well as supporting more renewable sources of energy and increasing energy efficiency.

The AIC thinks this is one of the world’s largest demonstrations of Open Innovation, in which all potential stakeholders are encouraged to put their heads together to propose new solutions to an industry challenge. This approach is the one taken by the AIC (albeit on a much smaller scale) in the AIC’s Industry Innovation Framework, described in the article "Innovation rests on engaging multiple stakeholders across the value chain" in this newsletter.
