Enable 2010 – Enabling Innovation in Australia’s new world city

Enable 2010 – Enabling Innovation in Australia’s new world city

Enable 2010 is an exciting new initiative that showcases Brisbane, Australia’s new world city, as a centre of world-class innovation.

From July 19 to 28, Enable2010 promoted and celebrated innovation and its essential role in driving Brisbane’s long-term economic prosperity and cementing the city’s reputation as a centre of excellence.

A range of initiatives took place which brought together industry, academia and government and offered the unique opportunity for collaboration between these sectors.

As a driver of innovation across industry, government and the research sector and a supporter of Enable 2010, the AIC was involved in a range of events throughout the initiative:

Eco Innovations: Sustaining Industry and the Environment – Monday 19 July 2010

Business leaders were treated to three fascinating insights into pursuing research and commercialisation of technologies that can make better use of our natural resources at the “Eco Innovations: Sustaining Industry and the Environment” Innovation Series luncheon. The event was hosted by Zernike Australia in partnership with the Australian Institute for Commercialisation.

The challenges faced with the development and commercialisation of sustainable aviation fuel was presented by Bill Lyons, General Manager, Boeing Research & Technology - Australia.

Andrew Lawson, Managing Director, MBD Energy, outlined new technology which holds the key to rapid, large scale CO2 emissions reduction from existing coal and gas fired power stations and other smoke-stack industries.

Dean Cameron, Founder, Biolytix Group, discussed how the use of Biomimicry in business can change the way we approach water treatment, and addressed the challenges facing an innovative business as it pursues a sustainable future.

Green Building Industry Workshop – Thursday 22 July

A workshop entitled “Sustainable Communities - fostering a local supply chain for green building materials and associated clean technologies” was held to determine the current activity in manufacturing of sustainable building materials and to explore strategies to foster clean technology integration into sustainable design and the built environment.

Moderated by John Kapeleris, Deputy CEO, AIC, the workshop explored best practice with Tony Stewart, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, McKinstry, on-line from Seattle, USA. As an early adopter of the DBOM process, they advocate collaborative and sustainable solutions that are designed to ensure occupant comfort, improve systems efficiency, reduce facility operational costs, and ultimately optimise client profitability for the life of their building.

Australian Innovation Exhibition – Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 July

The Australian Innovation Exhibition provided a national showcase of innovation and included a range of exciting and relevant events to inspire many more people to become involved with innovation and entrepreneurship. The Australian invented Scramjet technology, now in development with NASA, was also on display.

During the two-day exhibition, innovation experts from the AIC hosted a number of consulting clinics to advise entrepreneurs on the best strategies and techniques to progress their ideas further.

A range of formal seminars and workshops were also held, including “Are you ready to commercialise?” and “Pitching to succeed” facilitated by the AIC.

“Are you ready to commercialise?” provided attendees with the knowledge and tools required to commercialise an idea and take it to market, while “Pitching to succeed” provided insights on how to 'pitch' ideas for the purpose of attracting investors and collaborators.

The two day exhibition showcased Australian innovation to the business community, while providing opportunities for potential investors to examine innovations and inventions first-hand.
