AIC Manager recognised at the AIM Management Excellence Awards 2010
Dr John Kapeleris, Deputy CEO of the AIC, was a regional finalist in the recent AIM Management Excellence Awards in the category of Not For Profit Manager of the Year. The AIM Management Excellence Awards seek the best managers and leaders from business, government and industry.
Categories include “Professional Manager of the Year”, “Young Manager of the Year” and “Rural/Remote Manager of the Year” and in 2008 the category of “Not For Profit Manager of the Year” was also introduced in the Brisbane region.
The Not for Profit sector makes important contributions to society and the economy, the impacts of which are sometimes overlooked and was introduced in based on a strong and organic response from the local business community.
Finalists in this category, including the AIC’s Dr John Kapeleris, demonstrated their ability to transform cultures, align the development of individuals in their organisation to the needs of the business culture and manage the demands of stakeholders with finesse.
The regional winner and finalists from the Brisbane region included:
• Stephen Muggleton - Executive Director, Blue Care (Winner)
• Carol Birrell - Group Manager, Homelessness Services Women and Children Spiritus (Finalist)
• Mark Brooke - Chief Executive Officer, Asthma Foundation of Queensland (Finalist)
• Alison Dart - Senior State Partnerships Manager Qld WA SA, Starlight Children's Foundation (Finalist)
• John Kapeleris - Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Australian Institute for Commercialisation (Finalist)
• John Leahy - Chief Executive Officer, St Vincent's Holy Spirit Health (Finalist)
• Karen Spiller - Principal, St Aidan's School (Finalist)
• Bernard Wilson - Chief Executive Officer, Open Minds (Finalist)
Dr John Kapeleris said on reaching the AIM regional finals “It is an honour to be recognised as a finalist in the prestigious AIM Management Excellence Awards. Being part of a highly dynamic and successful team at the AIC brings out the best in a leader”.
Dr John Kapeleris in his role as Director of Commercialisation and Deputy CEO at the Australian Institute for Commercialisation (AIC) was responsible for establishing and running the AIC’s TechFast Program – "Accelerating Technology Transfer and Diffusion using a Market-pull Approach".
John has over 17 year’ experience in the Biotechnology Industry having held a diverse range of roles including R&D Manager, Quality Manager, Business Development Manager, VP Sales and Marketing and Deputy CEO at Panbio Ltd.
In his current role he has assisted numerous organisations achieve commercial outcomes from their ideas and product opportunities and has been involved in the successful negotiation of numerous technology transfer, licensing and distribution deals. He has worked on a number of projects related to intellectual property and has also been involved in conducting industry/market research, assisting start-up businesses and contributing to innovation policy, through strategic workshops and as an advisor on a number of committees and think tanks.
