The AIC provides commercialisation assistance to Malaysian businesses and government agencies

The AIC, in collaboration with AKEPT (Higher Education Leadership Academy), recently delivered the final workshop of the 2010 “Commercial-Savvy” program in Kuala Lumpur, designed to enhance the commercialisation education of senior academics and researchers across Malaysia.

The “Commercial-Savvy Academics Camp” (CSA Camp) program seeks to work closely with higher education institutions to provide researchers and commercialisation managers with the knowledge and skills to deliver commercial outcomes. The AIC has worked with AKEPT to deliver four two-day workshops throughout 2010 to a total of 200 participants.

The intensive two day workshop introduces participants to the various stages in the commercialisation process, covering topics such as commercialisation pathways, intellectual property, tailoring a research program for commercial gain, and R&D partnering.

The workshops were facilitated by the AIC’s Deputy CEO, John Kapeleris and Innovation Collaboration Consultant, Cameron Johns.

“Creating positive impact in the daily lives of Malaysian is the ultimate goal of Malaysian researchers and is at the heart of the Malaysian Prime Minister’s vision. Therefore being able to teach researchers the “how to” of commercialisation and how to structure their research to benefit Malaysian industry has been very rewarding.  It has been a pleasure to work with AKEPT this year and the calibre of the participants they invited to attend these courses was extremely high.” said Cameron.

A key component of the two-day workshop is the element of interactivity which allows participants to work in groups to apply and discuss the theory of what they have learned through a variety of tasks and projects. Moreover, a number of case studies are presented by guest speakers throughout the two days which provides participants with real-life examples of research commercialisation.

The guest speakers included:

1     Data’ Dr. Kamal Jit Singh, Chief Executive Officer, Unit Inovasi Khas (UNIK), Prime Minister's Office

1     Associate Professor Dr Norsaadah Ismail, Director of University-Industry Relations Division, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of  Higher Education

1     Professor Rahmah Noordin, Deputy Director, Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM), University of Science Malaysia

1     Associate. Professor. Rohazar Wati Zuallcobley, Associate Professor of Law, MARA University of Technology, Visiting Professor of Kumamoto University, Japan

The CSA Camp workshops are one of a number of ways the AIC is providing commercialisation assistance to Malaysian businesses and government departments.

Other initiatives being delivered by the AIC in Malaysia include helping multinational oil company Petronas with evaluation of its intellectual property, and with manufacturing research organisation SIRIM in market evaluation and collaboration with industry.
