Profile on… DJC Distribution All Insulation
Dennis and Barbara Marl from DJC Distribution All Insulation recently spoke to the AIC about the company’s journey along the commercialisation pathway. The company hasdesigned and developed an innovative insulation system for roller doors to significantly reduce the heat in garages in summer.
1. Briefly describe your business
DJC Distribution is a respected Company which has been operating on the Gold Coast for the past 17 years, insulating homes and businesses and we were part of the Government Insulation sch
eme.
2. How did you generate the idea?
Over the years many of our clients complained about how hot their garages were and didwe know of anyone who could help with this.
3. What made you decide to progress it from just an idea to a real business?
We searched around and there was nothing similar on the market. Over a 4 year period Dennis designed and patented a roller door insulation system, which could also incorporate panel lift door insulation.
4. What were the main challenges faced?
The main challenge was sourcing the exact materials needed to make our insulation work and be effective, plus being reasonably priced in the marketplace. Our main concern has always been that the public needed to be made aware that we have a product that has been fully tested and will save a lot of money on electricity bills. It is easy to install, comes in a DIY Kit and is lightweight so it will not damage motors or springs and is affordable.
5. What tips would you pass on to other entrepreneurs who are starting out?
Marketing is very important , the internet has been great, but there are other avenues that have to be explored as well, leaflet drops, newspaper and magazine coverage, procurement officers from the State & Federal Governments and networking.
6. Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently?
Have a 5 year plan for Sales and gear in the manufacturing.
7. Where do you see the business in 5 years’ time?
We envisage sales to other Countries as our Patent is going world-wide. It has already been tested in 4 countries with an “A” Rating result.
8. What would you suggest that AIC strives to tell government in Australia about
commercialisation?
Small businesses are finding it difficult at the moment with the international downturn. Governments need to focus on keeping small business viable, and therefore productive.
9. If you could have been responsible for any innovation, what would it be and why?
We feel all innovations are very exciting and now look forward to our product making its mark.
10. Which entrepreneur do you most admire and why?
Richard Branson is always a favourite as the man never stops trying to make a difference.
