Translating research into viable outcomes
An AIC Commercialisation Masterclass was recently held in Brisbane to help research organisations and universities maximise the impact of their research through strategic intellectual property management and creating a positive commercialisation culture.
An AIC Commercialisation Masterclass is an advanced intensive professional development workshop, which is the second workshop in the Commercialisation Bootcamp Program. It extends the participants’ existing knowledge gained from the two-day Commercialisation Bootcamp or from relevant personal experience, and explores further the various stages of the commercialisation process, from structuring a research program through to realising the potential of commercial outcomes in the market.
The workshop included several activities at the end of each session where participants applied the principles learnt to their own situation in interactive workshop sessions, in order to enhance their understanding and commercialisation capability.
Topics covered in this workshop include:
- Development and extension on existing commercialisation knowledge
- Understanding the process of valuing intellectual property and its importance
- Legal issues relating to commercialisation of IP
- Techniques and advice for negotiating deals
- Tailoring your invention process to achieve commercial outcomes
- Tips for managing innovation and collaboration for commercial results
- Technology for profit
- Funding and sourcing capital
A diverse group of 24 researchers, business managers and professionals from a variety of organisations attended the Bootcamp, including representatives from CSIRO, DET CRC, Boeing Research and Technology, CIEAM and QR Rail to name just a few.
In addition to the standard content, the program also included presentations from guest speakers, all of whom provided great insights into what is required to commercialise research. Dr Kymberley Vickery, AIC’s Senior Commercialisation consultant, spoke on her experience in IP valuation methodologies and how to use it as a basis for negotiation.
Feedback from participants was extremely positive; with 100 per cent of attendees stating that they feel their knowledge of commercialisation has increased as a result of attending the workshop and also that they have learnt new skills or techniques that they will now be able to apply to their work.
Mr Ian Hardwick of Deep Exploration Technologies CRC said “The Commercialisation Masterclass exceeded my expectations. It was refreshing to see real world examples and case studies used. I intend to send my team members along to this program." In addition, Liam Best from QR National gave this feedback “Anyone involved in commercialisation and IP - their first investment should be this Masterclass!".
Other feedback included "well organised, very useful, interesting, competent facilitation and speakers. Excellent!" and "a very good awakening regarding the emerging contemporary issues associated with commercialisation, particularly regarding assessing your current IP worth and guidance for effective commercialisation."
In recognition of the AIC’s contribution to improving commercialisation outcomes in Australia and abroad, the University of Adelaide’s ECIC provides credit to AIC Commercialisation Program participants. On successful completion of the program the participant can apply for credit to contribute towards the Masters of Science and Technology Commercialisation at the University of Adelaide.
The next Commercialisation Masterclass will be held in Melbourne on the 14th September 2011. To register for the Melbourne Masterclass click here.
